Northlane – Obsidian

Northlane surprised everyone with their critically acclaimed record Alien, where they introduced industrial and nu metal elements to their djent-styled metalcore sound, and on Obsidian, they’re doing the same, but this time they cut down the metalcore elements in favour of a more approachable style, mostly leaning into both alternative metal and industrial metal. This is a great benefit to their music, and although it doesn’t surpass their previous album in terms of quality, it almost matches it. I would’ve prefered if they kept the nu metal influence that they were showcasing previously, but as it is now, Obsidian is a strong project that not only seems to be a new direction for Northlane, but also shows their evolution and maturity as a band.
